there is a change in the polls. today yet another round of opinion polls showing governor romney pulling ahead of the president after that big debate. the governor now has a two-point lead in the latest gallup poll of likely voters. before the debate, the president was up by five points in the same poll. the obama camp down playing the numbers. one campaign spokesman says he expected this to happen. a live look now in ohio where governor romney is getting ready for a rally. 18 electoral votes up for grabs four weeks from tonight. as i reported, no republican has won the white house without first winning ohio. the governor started his day in another battle ground state, iowa. he responded to one of the president's latest attack lines over the governor's pledge to cut funding for pbs. home of big bird. >> these are tough times with real serious issues. so you have to scratch your head when the president spends the last week talking about saving big bird. i actually think we need to have a president who talks about saving the american people and saving good jobs and saving our future. >> shep: no
in florida, romney up one in virginia. but a word of caution about single polls, "the new york times" and quinnipiac shows the president up by five in virginia, up by three in wisconsin, and romney up by a single point in colorado. there's much more game in this game, folks. let's get right to our panel. our man in kentucky, chris matthews, host of "hardball," and chuck todd, host of the daily rundown. chris, if i might start with you, i know you like to see a good scrap. and you were disappointed by the president's performance last week. so you tell us, how does the 69-year-old political veteran tame the 42-year-old young gun tonight? >> well, i think he has to remind the people in the middle who are going to make the decision that this is about two very different points of view about the future of the country. the great thing about running against paul ryan is he has real beliefs. he believes we should get rid of medicare as we know it and tell 82-year-old people to go out and buy health insurance if they can find somebody to sell it to them. go get on the bus and find somebody to

of blunt romney's momentum, which is beginning to show up in the polls. we haven't seen anything truly definitive, but we know most people thought that mitt romney won the debate. democrats are looking for biden to blunt that momentum. can he do that? >> of course, joe biden, again, knows how to communicate very, very well. i think when people talk about last week, expectations for president obama are always exceedingly high and it was relatively easy for mr. romney who had an 11th hour conversion. we recall that he is the etch-a-sketch guy that has transformed himself and quite frankly, we always have to wonder which mitt is going to show up. so if you just lay out lie after lie after lie about your own plan as well as what the president has been talking about, of course, you can look good. vice president biden will do very, very well. he knows what has been going on. he is in touch with the american public, and i'm just hopeful mr. ryan will tell the truth. whether it's about medicare and that it's a voucher program, that mr. romney and mr. ryan, their health care plan will lead to m
romney. obama falls into the trap and his polls crash again. he loses a debate. he loses the week after the debate, and he loses big bird. i've never seen anything like this, newt. it is amateur hour. >> well, i think what you're finally seeing is that once the shell cracks and once the facade breaks, i think obama right now is totally disoriented. they are shocked watching six months of careful work just disappear in 90 minutes. it was the worst performance which an incumbent president i think in my lifetime. even jimmy carter did better than that 90-minute performance by obama, and i think they are probably literally shellshocked right now which sets the stage for tonight. i think it's going to be very interesting to watch tonight. i suspect, i don't know, but i suspect biden's going to come in there trying to re-establish some sense of momentum, and i think that ryan's got to go in, stick to the facts and be calm and steady and a potential president. >> just on the joe biden thing for a second. nobody, including obama, has really created an argument, a rationale, a reason for re-elec
